Another VRT...Cool it!!

So this my 01 Jetta VRT.

Image

First of all let’s talk about what it has so far.

FK Hi tech 55/40 kit
RPI 13” Race brake kit on the front
ECS 12 brake kit on the rear
TSW 17” Kyalami wheels on Hankook rubber

I pulled my stock motor and put it away for safe keeping and acquired another AFP vr6 and had it freshened up, including:

new rings
Honed cylinders
main bearings
rod bearings
ARP Rod bolts
ARP Main Studs
ARP Head Studs
Rebuilt Head
New timing chains and guides

DIY turbo kit including

ATP turbo manifold and down pipe
T3/t4 50 a/r turbo with .63 hot side (too small I know)
22” x 9” x 3” intercooler
Kinetic turbo intake pipe
Kinetic boost and intercooler pipes
Bosch diverter valve
Bosch 36 # injectors
C2 36# tune
4” C2 MAF housing
4” K & N filter
Tial 38mm wastegate (6psi spring)
SW boost gauge
Apexi AVCR Boost Controller
42 DD 3” gli exhaust

Here are a few shots

I really wanted to build the kit myself to save some cash….I think it turned out OK. I did save a lot of money compared to just buying a kit, however , the problem is…..the turbo is too small, it hits full boost at about 2800 rpm and a VR6 definitely flowed too much and the turbo was operating well past it’s choke range. In addition, with stock compression the fun is over at 9 psi.

Overall the car was Ok, but I felt there was much more potential.

So this year I am going to step it up a notch. After much research here is what I have so far….

First of all, let`s address the turbo…..

The new piece is a Rotomaster T60-1 with a t3 .82 A/R turbine with a P-Trim wheel and a .70 A/R compressor.

This turbo’s compressor map is very well suited for a VR6 and it will flow 61lbs/hr

Got to thank Clay from CTS for all his help with this!

Image

Image

To fuel the car I will turn to C2 for the 60#/hr tune and these…..

Image

I also picked up an Innovate Wideband

Image

An AEM Water meth kit

Image

A 9 to 1 head spacer

Image

A SRI with a billet fuel rail and adjustable FPR

Image

A walbro fuel pump

Image

So I plan to turn up the boost this year so I need to step it up in the drive train department.

I also picked up VF mount kit and a 02J with a Peloquin

The clutch is on it’s way, I bought a south bend OFE Series: SS Stage 4 from CTS

Hopefully with this set up I will tap in to more potential

As I start the install I will update.

Not really sure...There are a lot dyno sheets floating around vortex with 400 + on the 42 # setup.

What i do know, is there will be enough fuel for 500 whp, however, from what i read the MAF will max out around 450 whp.

I would be very happy with something around 400 whp. Anything over 450 and the stock rods become an issue.

I've speant enough money this year and really do not want to shell out the cash for rods, pistons etc. Besides, i want to have something to do next winter.

Nice project I always like seeing diy turbo kit, if in the near future you would like to get rid of your 'small turbo' let me know it would be a good replament to the turbo currently on my aba.
thanks

Very nice looking project and set up. What kind of power you shooting for?

I love everything about your car except the wheels. A little plain considering what's really under the hood.

Yes, I've been looking forward to seeing that your car actually looked like. She looks great and I cant wait to see the dyno sheets after the new turbo and injectors and the rest of gear is on her. BTW whenever your done with the 36's and have them out let me know, I can use them!

A little update

Postby gdt » Sun Mar 15, 2009 5:50 pm

It was nice out today so I decided to go out to the garage start on the car.

I wanted to accomplish 4 things today

1. Get the car in a better position in the garage so I could actually work on it.
2. Get the ECU out so I can send it to C2.
3. Remove the 36 # fuel injectors
4. Get the old turbo out.

All in all things went pretty well….It only took 3 hours to get it all done…..

Here is shot of the empty bay

Image

The 36# injectors (somebody might want these)

Image

The ECU, next time I see this it will have the 60 # map on it!!!!

Image

The old turbo (this will probably become available as well)

Image

Here is a fun shot of the old turbo compared to the new one.

Image

Car put away till next time…

Image

This week I’m going to try to mount up the turbo and SRI to see how they fit, might even start to think about the intercooler piping…..
